Henry Yates Thompson to W.T. Stead (September 24, 1888)

Quoted in J. W. Robertson Scott, The Life and Death of a Newspaper (1952) p. 150

I write in pursuance of our conversation to propose our new agreement: (i) that your salary be £1,000 instead of £1,200, with three months' notice on either side as before. (2) That, warned by the experience of the last years, the present position is very critical and self-control on your part is needed and willingness to consult others whenever emergencies arise which specially enlist your sympathies.
